TL;DR: Dial *#06# — if you see an EID (a 32-digit number), your phone supports eSIM. Then confirm your phone is carrier-unlocked. Both OK? You can use a travel eSIM in Japan.
The 2-minute check
1. Dial *#06#
Open the phone app and dial *#06#. A screen appears with your IMEI numbers.
- EID shown (32 digits) → your phone has eSIM hardware ✅
- No EID → your phone does not support eSIM ❌ (consider a physical SIM or pocket Wi-Fi)
2. Check the carrier lock
An eSIM only works if your phone is unlocked:
- iPhone: Settings › General › About › Carrier Lock — should say “No SIM restrictions”
- Android: Contact your carrier, or insert another carrier’s SIM to test
Phones bought on installment plans (especially from US and Japanese carriers) are often locked. Ask your carrier to unlock before traveling — it is usually free after the device is paid off.

Android installs use the QR code (scan from another screen) or manual entry — one-tap install is an iPhone-only feature (an Apple platform capability that Android does not offer for websites).
Not supported
- Mainland-China market models (often lack eSIM even when the global model has it)
- Carrier-locked phones (ask your carrier to unlock first)
- Tablets and smartwatches
- Devices not listed above — the

Common gotchas
- Chinese-market phones (mainland China models of Xiaomi/Oppo/Huawei) often have no eSIM even when the global model does.
- Dual-SIM usage: your physical SIM stays in the phone. Keep it active for calls/SMS and use the eSIM for data — that is the normal setup and our setup guide shows it step by step.
- Corporate phones may block adding an eSIM via device management (MDM). Test before your trip.
